Who is a good candidate for Invisalign?

With its “invisible” aesthetic appearance, it’s no surprise that clear aligners and Invisalign are appealing options to many today. The technology and science behind clear aligners have come a long way. And with the help from an orthodontic specialist like Dr. Irene, you’re that much closer to benefiting from this aesthetic appearance. At Glow, our team will comprehensively assess your smile and consider different options, such as Invisalign to help achieve your dream smile.

When considering Invisalign, one of the most important questions that you have to ask yourself is, “Will I or my child wear the aligners more than 20 hours a day, for the entire duration of the treatment?” This is the single most important factor in aligner treatment. If you don’t wear your aligners, it will not be able to help align your teeth continuously. It may sound like a difficult task, but many get used to wearing and caring for aligners. Just like how washing your hands has become a second nature to everyone during the past few months.

WHEN CAN MY CHILD GET INVISALIGN?

A common question that we get asked often is, “When can my child get Invisalign?” Age is usually not a deciding factor in considering Invisalign or other clear aligners. Whatever your or your child’s age may be, we can cater to the individual’s needs and prescribe the most appropriate treatment as needed.

Invisalign First aligners recently became available; which are specifically designed for children who still have primary (baby) teeth. They have spaces in the aligners to accommodate for exfoliating primary teeth as well as the permanent teeth growing in. Some of the features help expand the upper jaw and to some degree, the growth of the lower jaw. For teenagers with most of their permanent teeth, Invisalign is an option that we consider. It’s easier to keep the teeth clean and less likely to cause orthodontic “emergencies.” Invisalign is a great option even for adults. With healthy gum and bone supporting the teeth, any form of orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign and clear aligners can be considered at any age.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR INVISALIGN?

Generally speaking, if you have mild to moderate crowding, spacing, overjet, and/or overbite, you’re likely a suitable candidate for Invisalign. Overjet refers to how far the upper front teeth are from the lower front teeth. Overbite refers to how deep the upper front teeth vertically overlap with the lower front teeth. Also, if you have a mild crossbite of one or few teeth where the upper teeth are biting behind the lower teeth, aligners may still be an option.

Clear aligners may have limitations when it comes to severe forms of misalignment, or if the treatment requires multiple teeth extractions. On occasions like this, Invisalign aligners can be used in combination with braces on a few teeth that may need more attention. If having traditional braces is an absolute no for you or your child, we can discuss using Invisalign as a treatment option but with some compromises and alternative options.

During your initial consultation, we will discuss optimal treatment options for you or your child, and what to expect moving forward. To have your customized aligners made, we will also take a digital scan of your teeth with the latest technology-iTero element intraoral scanner. This means you don’t need to have a “gooey” impression taken. Ask your questions to our local orthodontists in Langley, BC!
